GSM 1800 : Large Frequency, Narrow Range

Mobile phone technology continues to develop from time to time. However, it does not mean the latest is the greatest. Each type of existing advantages and disadvantages of each.

Mobile phone technology in Indonesia has grown so rapidly. Do not be surprised if consumer interest was increasing. In the end the mobile phone users this year is expected to increase two-fold compared with last year.

Type mobile phone that first time you log in Indonesia is a type of NMT (Nordic mobile telephone). This provider type uses 450 MHz frequencies, but especially in Indonesia used the frequency of 470 MHz. NMT coverage area can reach 60 kilometers, allowing NMT used in remote areas far from downtown. However, the first provider of this type has a drawback, namely its relatively large so as to make NMT less effective and efficient for travel.

Following the development of NMT technology, there are also new cellular technology that is AMPS (advanced mobile phone system). AMPS system uses frequency 800 MHz and power jangkaunya about 1.5 km to 2 km. Because of its lightweight and can be transported easily, then the AMPS technology become a new choice in communicating. Even technology that originated in the United States was once the belle of the world's information world in the 1980s until the 1990s.

After the development of AMPS, there are also a digital cellular technology, CDMA (code division multiple access). CDMA is a technology developed by the U.S. military in 1989 and started operating in 1995. CDMA technology can use a frequency that has been used by the 800 MHz AMPS. Just, CDMA can also use 1700 MHz frequencies. Because it uses the same technology, then the analog AMPS system will be able to simply migrate to the digital CDMA system.

At almost the same with the advent of CDMA, GSM (global system for mobile communication) is introduced. By using the digital GSM system, technology that analogue NMT or AMPS practically unusable. For users of both systems, it is very harmful because they already use the old phone that cost is relatively expensive. This causes many of them reluctant to switch to GSM technology. But after the GSM operators look very seriously with his business, so they competed in the tasting of new technology. As a result, the current GSM system was the most widely used in Indonesia to issue mobile phone.

We use the GSM technology that is currently using 900 MHz frequency with a range of 1.5 km to 2 km only. However, coverage can be expanded by using a high antenna umbrella (umbrella). With use of umbrella antenna, GSM range can reach 35 km.

In fact, abandonment of NMT and AMPS systems not because they can not be used anymore, but rather because the two systems-especially the outdated NMT that are less convenient to carry anywhere. NMT and AMPS on the one hand still transmit analog sound manner, while the CDMA and GSM on the other uses digital technology that produces sound quality that much better. Therefore, AMPS and NMT is often referred to as first generation cellular, while GSM and CDMA cellular-called second generation.

Many people who compare GSM and CDMA in terms of technical quality. From a technical standpoint it is better CDMA. For example, the GSM technology that uses TDMA (time division multiple access) can only randomize the sound emitted. The CDMA in addition to randomize the sound, can also transmit sound in the codes that can not be completely tapped.

After the era of GSM 900 MHz appears again a new technology in the mobile phone world is PCS / PCN. System PCS / PCN (personal communications system / network) or better known as GSM 1800, is actually not a new technology. Basically this system is similar to GSM, only the higher frequencies used are 1.800/1.900 MHz. Unlike the use of GSM 900 MHz, PCN is a name given by European operators that use the 1,800 MHz frequency or so-called DCS (digital cellular system). Meanwhile, the PCS is used in America, with a frequency of 1.900 MHz. On the other hand, PHS is a Japanese standard that has spread to many countries in the world.

PCN service quality was allegedly better quality than GSM because it uses a higher frequency band. Moreover PCS CDMA technology developed from better quality and capacity than GSM.

However, better quality offered by PCS is not comparable with the relatively narrow jangkaunya power. According to research, PCS technology coverage only reaches 200 meters to 8 kilometers. Even the PHS system has a more narrow range, which is only around in a radius of 200 to 500 meters. To overcome the shortcomings that need to be made network of base stations are more numerous and tightly, so drop call or blank spots caused by the narrow range of PCS can be covered.

Thus, the process of migration from GSM to the PCN system is only a change in frequency, while the system is unchanged. It is different when the system is analogue NMT and AMPS replaced with a digital GSM system. NMT and AMPS does not have a connection to the GSM digital technology so that both technologies can not be used. The GSM technology can be said is still the one technology with PCS or GSM 1800. What distinguishes the two is in the use of frequencies. This enabled the SIM (subscriber identification module) GSM 900 can also be used on aircraft PCN. Even when it has available the types of phones that can be used at both frequencies. So, if you are using GSM 900, do not be too concerned with the emergence of this new technology. Thanks for D.
